Frequently Asked Questions

How many dog-friendly beaches are there in Malta?

There are 16 official dog-friendly beaches: 12 in Malta and 4 in Gozo. These are designated by the Commissioner for Animal Welfare and the Environmental Health Directorate.

Are there any sandy dog beaches in Malta?

Yes, but only one. Imġiebaħ Bay in Selmun is the only official sandy dog-friendly beach in Malta and Gozo. All other designated dog beaches are rocky.

What happens if I take my dog to a non-designated beach?

Fines range from €232 to €4,658 for a first offence, and up to €11,646 for repeat offences. Dogs are banned from all Blue Flag beaches and sandy beaches except Imġiebaħ Bay.

Can dogs swim at rocky beaches that aren't on this list?

Dogs can walk on rocky coastlines that aren't official bathing areas, but can only swim at the 16 designated beaches listed here. Some local councils may have additional restrictions, so check for signs.

When is the best time to visit dog beaches in Malta?

Early morning (before 9am) and late afternoon (after 5pm) are ideal, especially in summer when temperatures can exceed 35°C. The rocks get extremely hot midday and can burn your dog's paws. Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) offer the most comfortable conditions with warm water and mild air temperatures.

Are the dog beaches safe for swimming?

Most dog beaches are rocky with natural entry points into the sea. Water quality is generally good, though these beaches aren't part of the official bathing water monitoring programme. Check sea conditions before visiting — waves above 1 meter can make rocky entries dangerous. Avoid swimming after heavy rainfall when runoff may affect water quality.
